SeaZone History

The History Timeline below shows the evolution of SeaZone from its initial inception as a business unit within Metoc plc, a leading UK marine consultancy, through to its establishment as an independent company and growth to its current position as market leader for marine geographic information, software and services.

Whilst originally concentrating on the UK market SeaZone’s expanding data and software product portfolio together with its associated services and expertise is attracting increasing European and worldwide customers across existing proven and new customer sectors.

Sept 2010

SeaZone moves to Howbery Park, Wallingford, Oxfordshire

Mar 2010

HR Wallingford acquires 100 per cent of the equity of SeaZone Solutions Limited from the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO).

May 2009

SeaZone launches Global Marine Mapping Improvement Programme at the International Hydrographic Organisation Conference in Monaco

Mar 2009

SeaZone launches GeoTemporal Editor at Ocean Business 2009.

Sept 2008

SeaZone continues to improve SeaZone HydroSpatial, including its interoperability with other datasets, and expand its geographic coverage. There are now more than 400 established customers using SeaZone data.

Nov 2007

SeaZone registers as an INSPIRE spatial data interest community and submits SeaZone HydroSpatial data specification as example of best practice.

April 2007

SeaZone delivers HydroSpatial harmonised with Ordnance Survey land mapping (Mastermap Topography Layer) for the Thames Estuary to UK Government under SeaZone's Coastal Mapping Improvement Programme.

Sep 2006

SeaZone wins AGI 2006 Exhibitors Technical Innovation Award for SeaZone HydroSpatial.

Nov 2005

SeaZone becomes a world leader in the field of marine geographic information as a result of launching the first off the shelf digital marine map, SeaZone HydroSpatial, at AGI Conference, London.

Sep 2005

Metoc relinquished its stake in the business and SeaZone Solutions Limited became wholly-owned by Admiralty Holdings Ltd (AHL), one of many companies wholly owned by Government.

Apr 2004

SeaZone Solutions Limited established as a joint venture company between Metoc and Admiralty Holdings Limited (AHL), a company owned by the UK Secretary of State for Defence and operated on his behalf by the UKHO.

Jun 2003

SeaZone branded data service launched at a marine GIS conference, IMarEST, London.

Sep 2002

Metoc joins UKHO Licensed Partnering programme as part of the UKHO's wider markets initiative.

Nov 2001

Metoc appointed as a value added reseller of UKHO to licence the data to customers from November 2001 onwards.

Sep 1995

Metoc begins digitising paper copies of Admiralty charts, or using third-party data acquired from private producers of digital navigational products, under licence from the UKHO for internal project work.
