Principal scientist/engineer (coasts & oceans)

Are you experienced in the development and application of numerical models for marine consultancy and/or research? Would you like to take a leading role in an organisation at forefront of working with water? 

HR Wallingford is a world-leading research and consultancy organisation. From coastal infrastructure developments to environmental impact assessments, from ports and navigation simulations to offshore renewable energy solutions, we advise clients worldwide how to design and manage the water environment.

We are looking for an experienced Principal Scientist / Engineer to lead numerical modelling studies and to help us innovate through our research and development programme. 

You will need excellent coastal/estuarine hydrodynamic modelling skills, preferably using the TELEMAC system (although other hydrodynamic modelling skills will be considered, in particular with respect to code development) and an excellent understanding of physical oceanographic processes. You will be passionate about finding real-world applied solutions to complex challenges in the field of marine environmental hydraulics. You will have a commercial understanding and flexibility to work with others to deliver project requirements in an innovative and timely manner, and be continually looking at new ways to improve our capabilities and services.

Suitably experienced and exceptional candidates may be considered for the role of Technical Director.


  • Experienced in hydrodynamic modelling in coastal and/or estuarine waters 
  • Experienced in coding in FORTRAN, Python and/or Matlab
  • Degree educated in physical sciences, mathematics, or engineering
  • Post-graduate qualification in a related field
  • Excellent understanding of coastal and estuarine physical processes (in particular hydrodynamics)
  • Experienced in solving complex engineering / environmental challenges using numerical modelling
  • Customer focused
  • An eye for detail, taking pride in achieving the highest standards of model calibration/validation against observations. 
  • Able to work well with, and inspire, other modellers, scientists, and engineers. 
  • An excellent communicator, both spoken and written English, and experienced in writing clear technical reports / papers.
  • Experienced in presenting, explaining, and discussing complex problems with non-experts. 
  • Clear understanding of uncertainties and limitations in methods.
  • Work well under pressure and to sometimes tight deadlines.
  • Innovative, flexible, and able to adapt to changing requirements.
  • At least ten years’ relevant experience. 


  • Experienced in programming and modelling with the TELEMAC system.
  • Track record of publications in coastal/estuarine hydrodynamic modelling or similar. 
  • Track record in writing winning proposals for commercial projects and research funding.
  • Experience in parallel processing and High Performance Computing (HPC)/Linux clusters.
  • Experience of dispersion and/or water quality modelling assessments.
  • French language skills.
