Local Government Campaign

Increasing public awareness, calls for greater accountability and emerging legislation such as the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009, changing the way that the coastal zone and marine environment are managed. In particular, there are increased involvement by Local Government in marine spatial planning and regulation.

Recognising these drivers SeaZone is actively engaging with Local Government and associated stakeholder organisations (e.g. Wildlife Trusts, Sea Fisheries Committees, Coastal and Estuary Forums/Partnerships) to provide the necessary tools to help deliver better decisions and improved marine management.

The following campaign initiatives are being promoted and implemented. If you are interested in becoming involved or wish to discuss further please contact Alison Smith, Marketing Manager by telephone or emailing HaveYourSay@SeaZone.com

Local Government Workshops Findings Report - The Offshore Environment and Marine Spatial Information

SeaZone completed a series of six Local Government Regional Workshops throughout England during the autumn of 2008.

The workshops provided delegates with opportunities of discussing their roles within the coastal zone and marine environment, focusing on requirements for marine spatial information and use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to assist in project planning and implementation and securing better business efficiencies and improved decision making.

There were a series of presentations (both SeaZone and external organisations) in the morning followed by breakout groups in the afternoon to gain delegate feedback The events were sponsored by Ordnance Survey, British Geological Survey and The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office.

SeaZone have published a Findings Report from the feedback gained at the workshops. The report provided a better understanding of Local Government and other stakeholder geographic information requirements (across both land and sea), help secure funding for procurement and contribute to the future development and management of national datasets.

Local Government Market Research A Local Government Survey commissioned by SeaZone and undertaken in May 2008 with officers involved in marine related activities (predominantly coastal protection and management) within 92 coastal Authorities in England. (Scotland and Wales are being addressed independently).

Local Government Meetings Following on from the Regional Workshops SeaZone intends to further engage with Local Government Authorities and associated stakeholder organisations through county or district level meetings, to further promote the benefits of accessing comprehensive and authoritative geographic information (cross land and sea) and help define user needs.
